The Fire Sermon

One of my problems is that is hard for me to decide which book I´m going to read next. It happens every time I finish a book! Has it ever happened to you? anyway, this time I acted responsibly and decided to finish a book I began to read last year.

Title: The Fire Sermon
Author: Francesca Haig
Series/Trilogy: Yes
Pages: 384

Synopsis

Four hundred years in the future, the Earth has turned primitive following a nuclear fire that laid waste to civilization and nature. Though the radiation fallout has ended, for some unknowable reason every person is born with a twin. Of each pair one is an Alpha - physically perfect in every way - and the other an Omega burdened with deformity, small or large.

With the Council ruling an apartheid-like society, Omegas are branded and ostracized while the Alphas have gathered the world's sparse resources for themselves. Though proclaiming their superiority, for all their effort Alphas cannot escape one harsh fact: Whenever one twin dies, so does the other. Cass is a rare Omega, one burdened with psychic foresight. While her twin, Zach, gains power on the Alpha Council, she dares to dream the most dangerous dream of all: equality. For daring to envision a world in which Alphas and Omegas live side by side as equals, both the Council and the Resistance have her in their sights.

Opinión Personal

I´m going to start saying that the author´s idea in this book was so interesting, in fact, I don´t remember reading anything like this before, but I am a little dissapointed because I was expecting it to be a fast paced and action packed book, and there was a little action but it wasn´t enough for me. As I said at the beginning I was reading this book last year and I had to stop reading because I was enjoying the story but at the  same time I lost a little  interest in this book.
I have finally finished it and after all, I liked it. I liked the world created by this author and I thought at the same time that it was a harsh and difficult world, in this society, omegas are opressed by alphas and the only thing that "protect them" is the weird conection among the twins,  because if one of them (alpha or omega, it doesn´t matter) dies, it doesn´t matter where his/her twin is, he/she die inmediatly. It made me think about how difficult would be live in a world like this, in which your own family despise you and kick you out of the house, because that is the omega´s fate, once the parents find out which twin has a deformity, they branded him/her in the forehead and this people is taken to omega´s settlements, and I have to say that those aren´t the best in the world, the fields are infertile. Omegas are forbidden from going to school and they have to pay taxes, it is a really hard situation for these people, hunger and misery is all they have till they die.

I said before that the twins are connected meaning that if something happen  to one of them, the other twin is going to be affected, for example, if one of them get sick, the other twin is going to get sick too and it is the same if one of them die, the other is going to die no matter where he/she is and that is the reason why alphas in spite of despise omegas, take "care of them", because if they get hurt  it would mean a damage to the alpha twin  and this becomes more important to those who are in high ranges of the Council, the institution / government who rules the society. Besides these twins are always born male and female.

The main character, Cassandra or just Cass, is an omega, but she is a peculiar omega, she has all her limbs. her "anomaly" is on his head, she´s a seer and because of that when she and her twin were childs, their parents couldn´t know who was the alpha and who was the omega, in fact, they were twins that remained unsplit for a long time and that was the reason why the other childs despised  them. To Zack, the contempt continued even when his siter was branded and taked out to an omega settlement.

I enjoyed the beginning of the story because we can see that Zack commanded to bring her sister in order to lock her in a place where no one can´t hurt her and therefore can´t hurt him because he is in the high ranges of the Council. From that point for a few chapters we´re going to alternate between Cass´ past and her stay in the place where she ramains locked.

Cass not just see or feel some things that are going to happen in the future, she can also see some parts of what happened in the "Before",  the destruction and all of it; but also she can see visions of "the Island", a place which apparently is a tale, a place where omegas are welcomed and well treated; she´s going to try to escape and go in the island´s searching, but things are not going to be so easy and she will be envolved in many situations that will make her believe she´s guilty of carrying destruction wherever she goes.

I don´t want to say more about the story because I personally think that is better read it and find out things on your own. More than the first half is a little slow paced and almost nothing happens, though there are very interesting parts that make you wonder some things and those questions get answered along the book. The last 30 pages were the best for me, because in the end I found out that one of my theories about a character was correct but also there were events I wasn´t expecting.

I liked a lot Cass´ Character because even though sometimes she made me get stressed because she blames her almost for everything, we can see, at least that was my case, that she is so human though the world is so cruel in this book, the way she cared for others like nothing else matters; she was my favorite character of this book. In the other hand we have Zack, ambitious and manipulative, able to do whatever it takes to get what he wants, he´s a dork and I would have wished something happen to him but without affecting Cass. In general I liked the characters a lot, some that I can mention: Elsa, Kip and Piper.

In conclusion, the story wasn´t bad for me, as I said and I won´t get tired to say it,  the idea of the twins and all of this world was great! unfortunately I couldn´t get into the story as much as I wanted. Still I want to give the opportunity to the next book of the trilogy and I hope the author can improve the idea in the following books and explain us in a better way the beginning of this world, which was devastated by fire and rose from the ashes.

 Score

Have you read this book? If you´ve read it you can tell me what were your thoughts and if you´ve not, you can tell me if your interested in reading the book and what are you expecting. I will be glad to read your coments!

Black Widow Forever Red - Margaret Stohl
  • But there were some parts of yourself you just couldn´t share, not even with your friend.
The Fire Sermon - Francesca Haig
  • By definition you can´t be nostalgic if you can´t remember anything - he said - I suppose amnesia has its advantages.
  • Just for a few minutes, let´s pretend we´re not fugitives. Let´s just be two people at a dance.
  • You´ve always imagined a world where twins don´t have to hate each other. An unsplit world, where we wouldn´t even need a place like the island. Maybe it´s cowardice. Or maybe it´s kind of courage.
  •  You choose who you are.
Struck by lightning - Chris Colfer
  • You don’t get to pick where you’re from, but you always have control of where you’re going.
  • High School. Society’s bright idea to put all their aggressive, naive youth into one environment to torment and emotionally scar each other for life.
  • What grinds me the most is we're sending kids out into the world who don't know how to balance a checkbook, don't know how to apply for a loan, don't even know how to properly fill out a job application, but because they know the quadratic formula we consider them prepared for the world.
  • Teenagers don’t want to write unless it’s 140 characters or less these days.
  • If I can’t get them to listen to me, what makes me think someday I can get the world to?
  • "It’s never too late to change your life, Mother” I said to her.
  • I think I hate showing vulnerability to myself more than I do to other people.
  • It’s such a gamble, and the stakes are so high. But no one ever got anywhere by sitting still, and I keep reminding myself of that.
  • It´s hard enough to see her everyday and not have her recognize me, but to be considered a stranged by the person you love the most in the world is different serving size of heartache.
  • I had been on cloud nine all day until that point. But the higher your cloud, the farther your rain falls.
  • “Maybe you should figure that out,” I said in the nicest way I could. “You’ve got to show the world who you are before it tells you, Justin. Otherwise you become victim to someone you’re not."
  • I guess there is no such thing as history; it´s all just a bunch of common perceptions.
  • It was one of those moments when you want to help, but don’t know how. You think of a million things to say but are afraid you aren’t the correct person to say them. I knew I was the last person on Earth who should say something to her, but screw ethics, I did anyway.
  • I don´t like it when people hide behind masks.
  • I remember wanting to laugh,  but I held it in. I guess even then thought laughing at someone´s dream was one of the cruelest things one person could do to another.
  • Young people and dreams are like baby turtles on the beach. The eggs hatch and they have to scramble to the water before the birds get them. We all have our sights set on water, but only a lucky few make it there unscathed. Life has a way of swooping in and picking off the forces and beliefs that motivate us.
  • I feel like I just put all my hopes and dreams into an envelope and sent it to a total stranger.
  • We are our own greatest fears...
  • I think the worst thing you can do to someone is idolize them or make them out to be anything else but human; then you´re only giving them room to disappoint you.
  • Ambition doesn’t grow on trees, girlfriend. You gotta grow dem leaves yo’self.
  • Never be a sidekick to your own life!
  • A counselor told me once that it doesn´t matter if you are stuck in the past or trying forget the past; what matters is what you do with the present. So that´s why I try to soak it up as much as possible.
  • I guess I was so busy trying to get people to hear me, I never thought about listening.
  • Yes, unfortunately we live in a world where the pretty, the popular, and the wealthies sometimes prevail over the rest. And yes, sometimes people and circumstances get in the way of achieving your dreams and seeing your visions all the way through. And yes, If you hold an advantage over everyone else while you´re out there trying to get there (intelligence, creativity, or drive), people will always try to bring you down that much more.
  • even if these are just delusions occupying my time, thank God they are, because a life without meaning, without drive or focus, without dreams or goals, isn't life worth living.
  • Like having a great idea, life comes at you fast. It hits you and tries to escape and be expressed in any way possible. In a way, it's a lot like...lightning.
Glass Sword - Victoria Aveyard
  • It´s not in our nature to be quiet around each other, but now we have nothing to say.
  • Strange, my enemies know me best, and my family doesn´t know me at all.
  • I have become more, more than we could ever have dreamed. It frightens me.
  • I´m safer than I´ve been in days, surrounded by the peope I love most, and yet I´ve never wanted to cry more. For them, I hold back. I curl inward and bleed alone, inside, where no one else can see.
  • We seem weak because we want to.
  • Red running through silver, joining into something darker.
  • I suppose I should get used to being alone too. Not in the world, but in here. In my heart.
  • But I can’t shake the feeling that, while they stand with me, there’s no one beside me.
  • The money makes everyone desperate. Merchants want to get it, buyers want to keep it, and it blinds them all.
  • Some losses are impossible to forget.
  • Whatever wall I put up to keep the memories out is steadily crumbling into dust. But I can’t let it bury me. I can’t let the mistakes I’ve made bury me.
  • If I am a sword, I am a sword made of glass, and I feel myself beginning to shatter.
  • We can’t choose who we love. I wish, more than anything, that we could.

Gone Girl - Gillian Flynn

  • There’s something disturbing about recalling a warm memory and feeling utterly cold.
  • People love talking, and I have never been a huge talker. I carry on an inner monologue, but the words often don't reach my lips.
  • People say children from broken homes have it hard, but the children of charmed marriages have their own particular challenges.
  • I respect rules, because if you follow rules, things go smoothly, usually.
  • Our timing had never been good.

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Magician´s Nephew - C. S. Lewis

  • Well, you know how it feels if you begin hoping for something that you want desperately badly; you almost fight against the hope because it is too good to be true; you've been disappointed so often before.
  • And Aslan was bigger and more beautiful and more brightly golden and more terrible than he had thought. He dared not look into the great eyes.
  • But length of days with an evil heart is only length of misery and already she begins to know it. All get what they want; they do not always like it.
  • When things go wrong, you'll find they usually go on getting worse for some time; but when things once start going right they often go on getting better and better.

The Young Elites - Marie Lu

  • I look the same. I also look like a complete stranger.
  • They will cower at my feet, and I will make them bleed.
  • They were the best of friends as long as they did not know they were supposed to be enemies. The truth would do its damage soon enough.
  • To love is to be afraid. You are frightened, deathly terrified, that something will happen to those you love. Think of the possibilities. Does your heart clench with each thought? That, my friend, is love. And love enslaves us all, for you cannot have love without fear.

My Personal Opinion

I´m not a big fan of cómics, I mean, I like them, but I´m not used to read them, also Black Widow is probably not my favorite Avenger´s character, but the cover of the book just caught my attention xD and I was thinking about which book would be the first that I would like read this year and I thought about it over and over again till I finally decided to read this book.

I didn´t know much about the book, just that it was about Black Widow, or at least that is what I thought, because I was wrong, and you should know it, mostly  if you are a big fan of Black Widow and want to read this book, you shouldn't expect that she will be the main character; and I say it because I´ve seen some people who didn´t like this because the title is "Black Widow" and we can see the POV of Natasha, but it is narrated mostly by this girl named Ava Orlova (she was rescued 8 years ago by Black Widow) and Alex Manor (literally Ava´s dreamed boy). We don´t see much about Natasha´s past and I think you should know it, because, at least in my case, I was kind of disappointed because when I picked up this book I was expecting to know more about Black Widow and it didn´t happen but still the book was great!

I was caught in the story at the very beginning, which starts with Ava being rescued, from there a lot of things happen, it is a very interesting book and keep you wanting to know why some things happen in the book. When I found out what was happening I wasn´t impressed but still it didn´t disappoint me.

Black Widow was a character that I didn´t know much about, but I like her, she´s just an incredible woman, dangerous, cold and sarcastic but who has suffered too much, her childhood wasn´t easy and because of that I think her nature is justified, regardless she´s a person with feelings and fears like anyone and I liked to see that.  I didn´t like Ava´s character too much but I didn´t hate her either. Concerning Alex, I found hard to believe his love for Ava, he had just met her a couple of days ago ._. but It didn´t bother me, because the romance was the least I cared. This 3 characters are connected in a weird way with each other even when it didn´t seem that way in the beginning.

I really enjoyed the book, it was fast paced, action packed and very intriguing; I just felt like I was reading a comic or watching a movie.

So, basically I finished the book yesterday and I don´t know what should I feel, I was happily reading, finding out things and then the ending came and even though I was expecting it I didn´t think it would happen, I was like: "no way! really??"; I don´t know if it was necessary to the story, it was an emotional ending.

Apparently this book is gonna be part of a trilogy or series, I don´t know yet but I´m planning to read the following books because I´m quite interested in learning more about Ava after the ending of this book.

I don´t know what else can I say, this is the first Maragaret´s book that I read and I applaud her the fact that I couldn´t stop reading, I wanted to know what was going to happen, I do recommend this book.

I was a little scared when I started the book because I wanted to enjoy it, because since the last year one of my thoughts is: There´s nothing better than starting the year with a book that you really enjoyed! and fortunately my first reading in this year was great!
